Volunteer Coordinator

TurnOut is an Oakland-based nonprofit whose mission is to mobilize communities to power queer and trans movements. We work to recruit, train, and support individuals at every level of queer and trans grassroots movements, from volunteers to staff to Board members, partnering with over 200 queer and trans organizations doing a wide range of vital work for our communities.

TurnOut is seeking a part-time Volunteer Coordinator with a passion for LGBTQ+ community building. The Volunteer Coordinator will work to build and coordinate TurnOut’s network of volunteers in California and ensure that volunteer recruitment, support, training, and evaluations are running smoothly.

TurnOut’s model involves recruiting and supporting local Volunteer Captains who lead local efforts to recruit volunteers and support local queer and trans nonprofits with volunteer power. Volunteer Captains table at local queer and trans events to recruit volunteers, and they attend all volunteer events on-site to ensure that volunteers have the support they need. The Volunteer Coordinator recruits, trains, and supports Volunteer Captains so they can do their job successfully.

The overall goal of this position is to support TurnOut’s efforts to recruit volunteers dedicated to powering queer and trans movements, and to upskill the queer and trans nonprofit infrastructure to be more supportive and responsive to the needs of all volunteers, staff, and Board members, especially individuals who identify as BIPOC and trans.

This position is a great fit for outgoing candidates who are highly organized, detail-oriented, and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate wants to join us in “queering volunteering” by providing support for marginalized members of the queer and trans community and the organizations that serve those groups, and creating high-quality volunteer experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with TurnOut’s Executive Director to finalize the design and materials for TurnOut’s new Volunteer Captains program, which will recruit highly engaged volunteers; train them in volunteer recruitment, oversight, and management; and support them to carry out volunteer recruitment activities and oversee volunteers at TurnOut partner events.
  • Implement TurnOut’s Volunteer Captain program, including recruiting and training Volunteer Captains, supporting Volunteer Captains with regular check-ins, tracking performance of Volunteer Captains and the volunteers working under them, and conducting evaluations of the program.
  • Support Volunteer Captains to coordinate signups for volunteer opportunities, including answering general emails/questions, fielding group volunteer requests, fielding individual volunteer requests, and ensuring volunteers meet age and training requirements.
  • Support Volunteer Captains with professional development requests, including TurnOut’s support for trainings requested by Volunteer Captains to develop their skills.
  • Work with Volunteer Captains to identify volunteer recruitment activities in each of TurnOut’s target regions in California (Bay Area, LA, Orange County, San Diego) and support Volunteer Captains in their recruitment work, such as tabling at large-scale LGBTQ+ events and small-scale LGBTQ+ gatherings.
  • Conduct outreach to TurnOut’s existing nonprofit partners to learn about upcoming volunteer needs, and identify and conduct outreach to new organizations who may be a good fit to partner with TurnOut on volunteer projects.
  • Maintain a calendar of recruitment and volunteer events, ensuring that we have proper coverage of Volunteer Captains and TurnOut staff for all engagements.
  • Maintain relationships with TurnOut partner nonprofits to ensure we are providing the most effective and valuable support possible, including conducting evaluations of our work with our nonprofit partners and updating our programs based on what we learn from evaluations.
  • Produce email newsletters advertising upcoming volunteer opportunities in each of TurnOut’s target regions in California (Bay Area, LA, Orange County, San Diego). Update the website with new volunteer opportunities.
  • Provide support when needed on volunteer recruitment and training for TurnOut’s contracted event partners from April through October (e.g. LA Pride, SF Pride, Folsom Street Fair, etc).
  • Conduct regular tracking to make sure we are hitting our volunteer targets, identify early any areas we may be falling short, and come up with creative solutions to boost recruitment in cases where we are not hitting our numbers.
  • Coordinate Volunteer Captains in post-event follow up and evaluations process. If no Volunteer Captain is present at an event, the Volunteer Coordinator will take the lead on post-event evaluations.
  • Coordinate volunteer gratitude and stewardship processes, including sending thank you notes, gratitude items, offering free tickets to community events when available, and other ways of expressing gratitude to volunteers for their contributions.
  • Facilitate corporate engagement; respond to corporate requests for volunteering; create custom opportunities by request.
  • When needed, serve as an on-site volunteer coordinator. This can include checking-in volunteers, training volunteers, overseeing volunteers, and providing general support to volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a highly-motivated self-starter, with high attention to detail and creative ideas for expanding outreach and engaging volunteers effectively.

  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and public speaking ability, and must be culturally competent with the ability to communicate effectively across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Requires experience and/or competence working with queer and trans communities and communities of color.
  • Must possess a strong grasp of LGBTQ+ issues and a fluency regarding the wide range of work done by queer and trans nonprofits, as well as nonprofits focused on supporting BIPOC communities and other intersectional movements.
  • Requires an individual who is a self-starter, disciplined with their time, who is comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Requires strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing projects and priorities to completion successfully.
  • Experience with GivePulse and Squarespace a plus.
